‘Not really sure how to do this, and I always have difficulty with it, but here it goes.

Here’s my latest song for review. Mainly, please let me know what Genre you think it falls under, if any,

and if you get the concept of the song. All other comments welcome, as well – pro or con. Thank you.

Here are the lyrics:

Friends are far away when money changes hands
Find a friendly face when power shifts the dance

Only like likes like
Trying to find what’s like, like

When friends become your foes
Divided by your hair or nose
You’re judged from your head to your toes
By & By when nothing else goes

It seems alright when it’s good
It seems alright until you’re the one who’s no good

Well I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, there the best of ‘em
I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, yes the rest of ‘em

When money runs the show
Who should be allowed
When it matters who you know
Who should be allowed

Only like likes like
Trying to find what’s like, like

When natives have to go
Who should be allowed
When hate is status quo
Who should be allowed

It seems alright when it’s good
It seems alright until you’re the one who’s no good

Well I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, there the best of ‘em
I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, yes the rest of ‘em
I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, there the best of ‘em
I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, that’s the best of ‘em

When money runs the show
Who should be allowed
When it matters who you know
Who should be allowed

Only like likes like
Trying to find what’s like, like

When natives have to go
Who should be allowed
When hate is status quo
Who should be allowed

It seems alright when it’s good
It seems alright until you’re the one who’s no good

Well I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, there the best of ‘em
I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, yes the rest of ‘em
I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, there the best of ‘em
I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, that’s the best of ‘em
I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, there the best of ‘em
I would lay down, with the rest of ‘em, yes the rest of ‘em

Friends are far away when power shifts the dance.

wow, really cool. At first I thought whats up with the 5:22 time, then I forgot about time and just listened.

    Genre….phrew….no idea. Alternative Rock maybe?

Anyway awesome song. You might tweak the vocals up a bit in the mix.You could play with some of the EQ and stereo settings, just with a few tweaks they could bring out the all the great little details in the song

    Seriously enjoyed this! Do more

Thank you, James. Choosing song structure has been one of my blocks (learning structure, & then choosing if I should stick close to typical structure, or stretch it a bit beyond for artistic uniqueness – hence the extra time).

This is yet to be mixed, and yeah, I was wondering why turning up the vocals didn’t make much of a difference. After I get a few more insights on if the structure & lyrics work, I’ll get it fully mixed, meanwhile I’m gonna use your advice to mix it a bit on my own to practice separating & placing everything.

Sounds very David Bowie-esque. Perhaps that is because of the vocals and vocal phrasing. I like your voice but you sing out of tune occasionally. But, your ideas lyrically and musically are very solid. Cool tune. I love the sentiment. Very ’80′s retro. Good work.

      Thank you, Joe,

I’ve gotten the, “David Bowie”, & “80′s” reference on another song I’ve done. I’m not totally surprised, Bowie was quite an influence through my years of music appreciation. I still don’t have fellow band mates to help me with hearing the notes I’m not quite hitting (and for all others reading this, please note thet I totally appreciate & understand “out of tune”, to mean it doesn’t work for the listener – it doesn’t sound like it fits for the total flow of the song. This is very valuable for me to hear, & what I look forward to to make the needed adjustments in widening my overall audience). I know I’ve struggled with the high notes, yet can’t specifically hear the notes thet aren’t working, on my own.

You’re the first to comment on the lyrics. Thanks. I’m still concerned, though, “I will lay down…” doesn’t read, & I’ve rerecorded with the words, “I will stand ground…”, but I struggle even more to get that to sound in tune & appropriate (in my hearing, so far). If I could get the two of ‘em together for feedback on the two, I’d like to do that, next (if people are willing to listen to both).

I also got valuable feedback about missing possible builds & a bridge. So I’m playin’ with those, too.

Thanks for taking the time with this. This helps allot.
